Why learn Urdu?

For a child growing up abroad, Urdu is more than a school subject. It is how they speak with grandparents, read a birthday card from home and feel that they belong in two places at once.

Family
Children who can speak and read Urdu can talk with grandparents and relatives without someone translating for them.
Identity
Language carries stories, poetry, humour and manners. Knowing Urdu lets a child take part in their culture, not only watch it.
A second script
Learning to read right to left in a new script is good exercise for a young mind, and it gives a head start with related scripts.
Now, while it is easy
Young children pick up sounds and letter shapes quickly. A little regular practice early saves a lot of effort later.

From a single letter to a full sentence

Urdu letters change shape when they join. Scroll to see how four letters become a word, and how that word finds its place in a sentence.

  1. حرف The letter

Every word begins as separate letters. Here are four of them: kaaf, tay, alif and bay.

    ک ت ا ب

  2. لفظ The word

Joined together, the letters change shape. Kaaf and tay lose their tails, and the four become one word: kitaab, a book.

    کتاب

  3. جملہ The sentence

A word earns its meaning inside a sentence. "Yeh meri kitaab hai" means "This is my book".

    یہ میری کتاب ہے

  4. پڑھنا، لکھنا، بولنا Read, write, speak

Then the sentence is read aloud, written by hand and said from memory, until it belongs to the child.

Why Aao Urdu Parhain?

A clear path
Lessons follow a sequence, so each new skill rests on one your child already has.
All four skills
Listening, speaking, reading and writing are practised together, so children do not end up understanding Urdu but unable to read it.
Made for children abroad
Lessons assume English is the stronger language and build Urdu from there, without making a child feel behind.
Parents kept informed
You know what your child is working on and how to help for a few minutes at home.

How lessons work

  1. Book a trial lesson

Tell us your child's age, where you live and how much Urdu they already know.

  2. Find the starting point

The trial lesson shows what your child can already hear, say, read and write.

  3. Learn live online

Your child joins lessons from home, at a time that suits your time zone.

  4. Practise a little at home

Short activities between lessons keep new letters and words fresh.

  5. See the progress

You hear how your child is doing and what comes next.

The learning journey

Children learn a language in the order they learned their first one: ears first, then voice, then eyes and hand.

  1. سننا

    Listen

Hearing the sounds of Urdu clearly, including the ones English does not have.

  2. بولنا

    Speak

Saying words and short sentences aloud without worrying about mistakes.

  3. پڑھنا

    Read

Recognising letters, joining them into words and reading with growing fluency.

  4. لکھنا

    Write

Forming letters correctly from right to left and writing words from memory.

  5. سمجھنا

    Understand

Following a story, answering questions about it and using Urdu in real life.

Learning levels

Each level has a clear goal. Children move up when they are ready, not when the calendar says so.

Questions parents ask

All questions
My child understands Urdu but replies in English. Can they still learn to read?

Yes. Children who already understand spoken Urdu often learn to read quickly, because the words they sound out are words they recognise. Lessons also give them the confidence to start answering in Urdu.

Does my child need any Urdu before starting?

No. Complete beginners are welcome. The trial lesson shows where your child should begin.

What do we need for an online lesson?

A laptop or tablet with a camera and microphone, a steady internet connection, a quiet place to sit, and a notebook and pencil.

Do I need to speak Urdu myself to support my child?

No. It helps if a child hears Urdu at home, but the guidance we give parents is simple enough to follow even if your own Urdu is limited.

What ages do you teach?
